Intended Use
Immunoturbidimetric assay for the quantitative in vitro determination of Myoglobin in human serum. This product is suitable for use on the RX Series instruments which includes the Rx Daytona and Rx Imola. Fully automated procedures are also available for a wide range of other instruments.
Clinical Significance
Myoglobin is an oxygen binding haem-protein found in cardiac and skeletal muscle. Myoglobin is released into the blood continuously as a result of normal muscle cell turnover however is released in much greater amounts in response to muscle damage.
After a heart attack levels of Myoglobin in the blood rise rapidly (within 1-3 hours) and peak at around 8-12 hours post infarction. As Myoglobin is not specific to heart muscle additional tests such as CK-MB and Troponin are usually used to confirm that the high levels of Myoglobin are due to myocardial infarction.
Elevated levels of Myoglobin are also present during surgery and in conditions such as myositis and muscular dystrophy.
Principle
The Randox Myoglobin latex reagent is a suspension of polystyrene latex particles of uniform size coated with anti-human myoglobin. When serum containing myoglobin is mixed with the Myoglobin latex reagent, an increase in turbidity can be measured at 570 nm. By constructing a standard curve from the absorbance of standards, the myoglobin concentration can be determined.
