Intended Use
For the quantitative in vitro determination of Chloride in serum, plasma and urine. This product is suitable for manual and automated use.
Clinical Significance
Chloride is almost always tested alongside other electrolytes including sodium and potassium to screen for a wide variety of conditions. Chloride levels in the blood are important in the diagnosis and treatment of vomiting, diarrhoea, dehydration, hypertension, and cardiac distress.
Elevated levels of chloride (hyperchloremia) in the blood are usually associated with dehydration however in some instances can indicate kidney disease.
Decreased levels of chloride (hypochloremia) in the blood are often associated with prolonged vomiting, burns, overhydration and thiazide therapy.
Principle
Chloride ions react with mercurious thiocyanate to form mercury perchlorate and thiocyanate. The liberated thiocyanate forms a red complex with ferric chloride in the presence of nitric acid.
