Intended Use
For the quantitative in vitro determination of Sodium in serum or plasma. This product is suitable for use on the Hitachi 704, 717, 902, 911 and 912 analysers.
Clinical Significance
Sodium measurements are used to help diagnose and monitor the treatment of aldosteronism, diabetes insipidus, adrenal hyper-tension, Addison’s disease, dehydration, inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion and a variety of other diseases involving electrolyte imbalance.
A low level of sodium in the blood is often referred to as hyponatraemia and can be the result of water retention, too much water intake, odema or sodium loss through vomiting, sweating, diuretic administration, kidney disease or Addison’s disease.
Higher than normal levels of sodium in the blood (hypernatraemia) may be due to diabetes insipidus in such cases were the total amount of water in the body is normal. Elevated levels of sodium in the blood may indicate hyperaldosteronism or Cushing’s syndrome if total body water is also high.
Principle
Sodium is determined enzymatically via sodium dependent β-galactosidase activity with ONPG as substrate. The absorbance at 405 nm of the product O-nitrophenyl is proportional to the sodium concentration.
