Intended Use
For the quantitative in vitro determination of Triglycerides in serum and plasma. This product is suitable for use on the Hitachi 917 and Modular P.
Clinical Significance
Triglycerides are the main component of animal fats and vegetable oils. They consist of fatty acids linked to a glycerol backbone.
Triglycerides are usually measured as part of the lipid profile, results of which are used to assess an individual’s risk of developing heart disease.
High triglyceride levels increase the atherogenicity of HDL and LDL. Triglyceride levels are elevated immediately after a meal and high levels can dramatically affect the accuracy of HDL and LDL measurements.
A triglyceride concentration below 150 mg/dl or 1.7mmol/L is desirable, levels higher than this are not only associated with an increased risk of heart disease but also type 2 diabetes, kidney disease, hypothyroidism and pancreatitis.
Principle
The triglycerides are determined after enzymatic hydrolysis with lipases. The indicator is a quinoneimine formed from hydrogen-peroxide, 4-aminophenazone and 4-chlorophenol under the catalytic influence of peroxidase.
