Intended Use

A urea test system is a device intended for the quantitative in vitro determination of urea concentration in serum, plasma and urine. This product is suitable for use on the RX Series instruments which includes the Rx Daytona and Rx Imola.

Clinical Significance

Urea is synthesized in the liver and is a waste product of protein digestion removed from the body in the urine. Urea is measured to monitor patients undergoing dialysis and to evaluate renal and metabolic function.

Higher than normal levels of urea indicate problems with kidney function however levels are also increased as a result of congestive heart failure, heart attack, shock and dehydration. Lower than normal levels are not usually of clinical significance however have been associated with pregnancy and liver disease.

Principle

Urea is hydrolysed in the presence of water and urease to produce ammonia and carbon dioxide. The ammonia produced in the first reaction combines with α-oxoglutarate and NADH in the presence of glutamate-dehydrogenase to yield glutamate and NAD+.
