Intended Use

For the quantitative in vitro determination of Urea in serum, plasma and urine. This product is suitable for manual use and on the RX Monza.

Clinical Significance

Urea is synthesized in the liver and is a waste product of protein digestion removed from the body in the urine. Urea is measured to monitor patients undergoing dialysis and to evaluate renal and metabolic function.

Higher than normal levels of urea indicate problems with kidney function however levels are also increased as a result of congestive heart failure, heart attack, shock and dehydration. Lower than normal levels are not usually of clinical significance however have been associated with pregnancy and liver disease.

Principle

Urea in serum is hydrolysed to ammonia in the presence of urease. The ammonia is then measured photometrically by Berthelot's reaction.
