Intended Use

For the quantitative in vitro determination of Clenbuterol in urine, tissue and feed.

Clinical Significance

Clenbuterol belongs to a group of drugs commonly referred to as the β-Agonists; it is widely used around the world in both human and veterinary medicine to treat respiratory diseases.

Clenbuterol is often used illegally in meat production to improve the lean meat to fat ratio and accelerate growth in livestock and other food producing animals.

Clenbuterol is often administered to food producing animals in much higher doses than is normal for therapeutic use as such Clenbuterol drug residues can be left behind in meat and other animal products. Clenbuterol drug residues are thought to be responsible for many reported cases of food poisoning, it is therefore extremely important to monitor and screen for harmful drug residues.

Principle

A strip-well microtitre plate is pre coated with a Clenbuterol antibody. Clenbuterol present in standards or samples competes for antibody sites with a horseradish peroxidase-labelled Clenbuterol conjugate.

The microtitre plate is then washed and the enzyme substrate is added. Following the recommended incubation period at room temperature the colour reaction is stopped by the addition of Stop Solution, producing a colour change from blue to yellow. The optical density is read at 450 nm with the colour intensity being inversely proportional to the concentration of clenbuterol in the sample.
