Intended use

For the quantitative in vitro determination of Cystatin C in serum and plasma. This product is suitable for both manual and automated use.


Clinical Significance

Cystatin C is a protein encoded by the CST3 gene and is an excellent biomarker for kidney function it is found in all nucleated cells in the body. Cystatin C is freely filtered by the Glomerular membrane, making blood levels a good indicator of Glomerular Filtrate (GFR) function.

Creatinine is the most widely used standard GFR marker but has various disadvantages; creatinine levels are affected by age, gender, race, physical activity, diet and disease. It is secreted by tubular cells into the bloodstream which means that measures such as a 24 hour urine sample is required. Creatinine is also unable to detect small decreases in GFR.

Unlike creatinine normal Cystatin C levels are not affected by age, gender, race, muscle mass, diet or inflammation. Cystatin C is degraded in renal tubular cells and not secreted by the kidneys, which means that plasma/serum levels are dependent on GFR. Diabetes, cardiovascular disease and stroke are linked to renal dysfunction and studies have shown that Cystatin C is more sensitive compared to creatinine detection.


Principle

A latex agglutination complex (read at 570nm) is found between Cystatin C and latex particles.
