Intended Use

Randox Prothrombin Time reagent is intended for use in performing the one step Prothrombin Time (PT) test. This product is suitable for use with manual or semi-automated methods.

Clinical Significance

Prothrombin Time (PT) is an expression of the time it takes for blood to clot when it is mixed with a thromboplastin reagent. An increased Prothrombin time means that blood is taking longer to form a clot.

The Prothrombin time test is widely used as a pre-surgical screening tool for inherited or acquired disorders of the extrinsic pathway of coagulation and to monitor the use and effectiveness of oral anticoagulation therapy including coumadin and warfarin.

An abnormal PT may indicate:

  • Vitamin K deficiency
  • Severe liver disease
  • Deficiency in various blood clotting factors

Principle

Tissue thromboplastin, in the presence of calcium ions is an activator which initiates the extrinsic pathway of coagulation. When a mixture of tissue thromboplastin and calcium ions are added to the normal anticoagulated plasma, the clotting mechanism is initiated and a solid clot is formed within a specified time period.
