Intended Use

For the quantitative in vitro determination of Total Antioxidant Status in serum, plasma, wine, beer and fruit juice. This product is suitable for both manual and automated use.


Clinical Significance


The antioxidant defense system has many components. A deficiency in any of these components can cause a reduction in the overall antioxidant status of an individual. Reduction in total antioxidant status has been implicated in several disease states, such as cancer and heart disease. Randox total antioxidant status kit enables assessment of the integrated antioxidant system which encompasses all biological components with antioxidant activity.

The Randox Total Antioxidant Status kit can also be used to determine the phenolic content of beverages such as wine, beer and fruit juice. Antioxidants present in red wine, tea and other beverages have been shown to give a cardio-protective effect. The compounds in beverages, which contribute to this effect, are Phenolics, of which Polymeric Phenols are the largest subgroup. Phenolics also contribute towards the taste, color, odor and preservative of the beverage.


Principle

ABTS® (2, 2’-Azino-di-[3-ethylbenzthiazoline sulphonate]) is incubated with a peroxidase (metmyoglobin) and H2O2 to produce the radical cation ABTS®*+. This has a relatively stable blue-green color, which is measured at 600 nm. Antioxidants in the added sample cause suppression of this color production to a degree which is proportional to their concentration.
