Intended Use

For the quantitative in vitro determination of Total Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC) in serum. This product is suitable for Manual use.

Clinical Significance

Measurements obtained by this device are used in the diagnosis and treatment of anemia.

Total Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC) is tested alongside serum iron to determine the bloods capacity to bind iron with transferrin. It is therefore an indirect measure of transferrin particularly important when testing for anemia and iron deficiency.

In individuals deficient in iron TIBC is increased however in iron overload the TIBC will be low or normal.

High levels of transferrin or a high TIBC is also associated with pregnancy and the use of the contraceptive pill. A low level of transferrin in the blood or a low TIBC may be contributed to hemochromatosis, anemia, poor nutritional status, liver disease or kidney disease.

Principle

An excess of iron is added to the serum to saturate the transferrin. The unbound iron is precipitated with basic magnesium carbonate. After centrifugation the iron in the supernatant is determined.
